How to Make Sugar Glass in the Microwave!
Sugar glass (and candy in general) is a daunting stunt on the stovetop but what if I told you that you could make it in the microwave in 2.5 minutes!? Go ahead and give it a go! This is the most fun microwave trick I’ve ever learned…
Think of the possibilities with your gingerbread creations like these colorful lightbulb cupcake toppers or house windows! It’s just 2 parts sugar to 1 part light corn syrup for 2:30 on high (it might be slightly different for each microwave) HANDLE WITH CARE – IT’S VERY HOT!! and use immediately on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet as it will harden very fast. I mixed 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup corn syrup in a microwaveable glass bowl for these bulbs. You could add food coloring OR backlight them with a string of Christmas lights!
Isn’t that just the coolest and easiest trick? Here are a couple of extra tips:
-Don’t microwave sugar glass for too long, if it overheats, it will burn and turn yellow and then brown. So be sure to watch it carefully for color changes especially if you are making more or less than I did. It will then require more or less time in the microwave.
-It will inevitably be a difficult mess to clean up. So be prepared for that. The candy sticks to the glass bowl surface very well and hardens quickly. Soak it in water overnight and just keep scrubbing until it all dissolves!
